De bortglömda barnen - en kvalitativ undersökning av attityder till intersex hos personer som arbetar med barn och ungdomar inom samhällsinstitutioner i Malmö

Abstract (Swedish)

Genom att anlägga ett teoretiskt perspektiv av Judith Butler där kategorier som ”kön” och ”genus” betraktas som oseparerbara, och där en heterosexuell matris dikterar de villkor inom vilka kön, kroppar och begär (sexuella) befästs och uppfattas som naturliga och fixerade, har jag undersökt attityder till intersex hos personer som arbetar med barn och ungdomar inom samhällsinstitutioner i Malmö, Sverige.


Mitt syfte har varit att bidra till forskningen om intersex i Sverige genom att få praktiskt användbar kunskap att bygga framtida utbildnings- och informationsinsatser på. För att uppnå mitt syfte har följande frågeställning ställts: Vilka attityder till intersex kan identifieras hos personer som arbetar med barn och ungdomar inom samhällsinstitutioner i Malmö? För att besvara frågan gjordes en enkätundersökning vilken följdes av uppföljande frågor. En kvalitativ induktiv innehållsanalys har använts för att tolka och analysera resultaten.


Resultaten visar att attityder till intersex präglas av en förståelse av intersex utifrån dikotoma könskategorier som inte ifrågasätts medan andras attityd var att de könsdikotoma kategorierna bör ifrågasättas. Mångas attityd var att intersex hade att göra med både könsidentitet, ”fysiskt kön” eller bådadera. Attityder till intersex visar också på öppenhet och tolerans. En stor mängd vet inte vad intersex är och har attityden att intersex kanske inte heller är relevant att veta så mycket om. Överlag så visas attityder till intersex som en lågprioriterad fråga eller att det inte anses viktigt och tydliga attityder som uppvisas är ointresse för intersex samtidigt som en majoritet uttrycker en positiv attityd kring intersex i bemärkelsen att mer utbildning efterfrågas och många ger också förslag på insatser. Personer som arbetar med barn och ungdomar inom samhällsinstitutioner i Malmö uppvisar alltså också attityder till intersex vilka är framåtblickande och förhoppningsfulla.

Abstract

This study explores attitudes toward intersex amongst people working with children and youth within community institutions in Malmö, Sweden. This has been done by applying a theoretical perspective by Judith Butler where categories such as ”sex” and ”gender” are seen as inseparable and a heterosexual matrix dictates the conditions under which sex, bodies and desires (sexual) are naturalised and viewed as fixed.


The aim of this study has been to contribute to the field of intersex studies in Sweden by gaining practical knowledge in the purpose of future educational and information-efforts to be based upon. To do this I have attempted to answer the question: Which attitudes toward intersex can be identified amongst people who are working with children and youth within community institutions in Malmö? I have used a survey quest to answer the question, along with further questions to a few informants. A qualitative inductive content analysis has been used to interpret and analyze the results.


The results show that attitudes toward intersex are characterized by both an understanding of intersex through undisputed dichotomous categories of sex and also attitudes suggesting the dichotomy regarding sex categories should be disputed. Attitudes expressed is that intersex is linked toward both gender identity, ”physical sex” or both. The results also points toward having an open mind and being tolerant toward intersex. A large proportion of the group does not know what intersex is and are expressing attitudes suggesting that it’s irrelevant. Overall the attitudes displayed toward intersex is that it is of low priority or that it is not important. Attitudes further point to non interest toward intersex while at the same time a positive attitude toward intersex is expressed by a majority of the respondents who requests further education and also make proposals for interventions. People who are working with children and youth within community institutions in Malmö is therefore also expressing forward-thinking and hopeful attitudes toward intersex.
