Abstract
Traffic is increasing in the cities and most of the main roads are not designed for today's traffic, this creates environmental problems like noise and air pollution. Road users choose other roads that are not intended for through traffic, leading to congestion and dense traffic. The high traffic volume destroys housing environments and makes it unsafe and unpleasant to be out, especially for children and elders (Elvik and Vaa, 2004).
Many urban areas are exposed to this problem and there are many measures that can be taken, however, not all measures can be relevant to certain urban areas. In this essay, Halmstad has been chosen as a case study. The problem is in Halmstad that there is a high proportion of traffic in the city. The car is... (More)

Many urban areas are exposed to this problem and there are many measures that can be taken, however, not all measures can be relevant to certain urban areas. In this essay, Halmstad has been chosen as a case study. The problem is in Halmstad that there is a high proportion of traffic in the city. The car is prioritized in front of other means of travel, which has led to a more attractive and flexible choice of the car than other means of transport. This leads to major environmental impacts on both noise and air pollution. To achieve a long-term sustainable society, transport and travel must be moved to other alternatives that are more environmentally friendly transport modes without deteriorating accessibility, Sabina Andersson writes, etc. in an action program.
Public transport is not sufficiently fast and easy today, as it could be an attractive alternative. Travel by city traffic has barely increased in the past fifteen years, and public transport is less than in other equal cities according to the action program. The buses share space with other vehicles in the road network, which means that accessibility is the same for all types of vehicles. (Less)
