- Abstract
- The inspiration of this study stems from my own experiences of working for the people with developmental disabilities at group homes in accordance with LSS- act (1993:387). The Swedish LSS-act ought to assure a good life to those in need of support for their everyday life. The purpose of the law is to encourage full participation of social activities, promote even-living conditions and opportunity for a decent life similar to that of general populace. The purpose of the law is to encourage full participation of social activities, promote even-living conditions and opportunity for a decent life similar to that of general populace. The aforementioned purpose should be met through good support, service as well as adequate care and it should, also, be executed with the full consideration of the individual’s self-determination and participation. The case study, chosen for this research, combines quantity and quality methodology in order to evince the attitudes and knowledge of the staff in group homes as well as how these disclosed attitudes and knowledge affect the work put forward for the purpose of LSS-act. The results, obtained through interviews and surveys, reveal inconsistency and inadequacy of knowledge on the subject matter (LSS-act). The abovementioned inadequacy is partly found in the competence to deal acute life and health issues as well as some pedagogic methods. The theory of sociology of law describes how the norms, knowledge and experiences of the staff will affect the implementation of the LSS-act on their daily tasks. The studies show that when the individual staff members who do not live up the goals and the purpose of LSS-act are more likely to ignore the care-receivers’ right to self-determination and voluntary participation.
