Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the current discourses regarding eating disorders among men and women in selected Swedish online forums. The question formulations I have used to answer the purpose have been as follows: how are eating disorders constructed in the selected forums? How are men and women with eating disorders respectively constructed in the selected forums?

To find empirical data, which I consider relevant to this study, I have used a targeted selection. 22 forum threads from different Swedish online forums have been analyzed. To find forum threads about eating disorders, I have searched on the forums using the keyword “eating disorder” alongside stereotypical male and female synonyms such as “boyfriend” or... (More)
The purpose of this study was to analyze the current discourses regarding eating disorders among men and women in selected Swedish online forums.

To find forum threads about eating disorders, I have searched on the forums using the keyword “eating disorder” alongside stereotypical male and female synonyms such as “boyfriend” or “girlfriend”. The method that I have used in this paper is Norman Fairclough’s model for a critical discourse analysis. Since Fairclough’s model is serving as both a method and a theory, I have also used it as the theory to analyze the data. Furthermore, I have completed the analysis using a gender perspective.

The results of this study show that there are different discourses regarding eating disorders in the forums. The most common discourse to occur, considered eating disorders as diseases that will only affect women. Men who reach for advice in the forums are mostly questioned and rejected. Discourses regarding men being strong and women as objects were also found and considered to influence the construction of men and woman who suffer from eating disorders. (Less)
