Men's violence against women is a constant and relevant topic for social-workers. The
perspective of the men and their view of violence is necessary to an in-depth understanding of
the complexity of violence against women in our society. The aim of this study was to

analyze how men wrote on anonymous forum about physical abuse against women in close
relationship. The intention was to bring more awareness to the strategies men use in their
explanations of violence. The aim was to understand how different accounts in their stories
were used to justify and excuse the morally reprehensible actions. We also wanted to know
how the stigma of being an abuser of woman affected the stories they told online. The study is
based on a text analysis and we opted to find our empirical material in online forums were the
men had chosen to be anonymous in their storytelling. We chose twenty one threads written
by different men online. The theoretical tools we used in the analysis were Stigma and
Accounts. After applying the theories on our material we found four summary themes; The
making of the scene, the triggering factors of violence , “I’m not the master of myself” and
the moralizing of violence. Our conclusion is that men use different accounts to reduce the
stigma of being a women abuser and in the long run to reduce the sense of shame in relation
to the violence.
