Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to interpret and understand girls at treatment homes, their experiences of motivation and school, as the school is of great importance for motivation and how it is created and shaped (Davidsson & Flato, 2010). To interpret this, the study used a hermeneutic approach. A convenience sample was used to select treatment homes and the girls participating in the study were strategically selected. Semi- structured personal interviews were conducted with girls between the ages of 15 and 20 who were in a treatment home and attended school. The interviews were interpreted based on the hermeneutics of suspicion along with a thematic analysis. The results showed that experiences of former schools largely affected the... (More)

Semi- structured personal interviews were conducted with girls between the ages of 15 and 20 who were in a treatment home and attended school. The interviews were interpreted based on the hermeneutics of suspicion along with a thematic analysis. The results showed that experiences of former schools largely affected the girls’ motivation. Too high demands, teachers lack of understanding and past failures were factors that reduced motivation. Furthermore, the result showed that the girls were driven by external motivation. Focus on getting grades as reward was most prevalent. The meeting with teachers and staff influenced the girls' motivation to a large extent. The experience to be seen and confirmed generated motivation. Deficiencies in the meeting contributed to increased mental health which reduced the motivation of the girls. With knowledge of what motivates girls in treatment homes and how motivation can be affected, teachers and staff can work to improve girls´ motivation. (Less)
