- The integration of an ecosystem service (ES) approach when conducting environmental impact assessments (EIA) is a fairly new process. - The integration of an ecosystem service (ES) approach when conducting environmental impact assessments (EIA) is a fairly new process. Earlier studies show that an integration of ES in EIA might be beneficial to the identification and evaluation of environmental impacts from a plan or a project, but that there is a need for more hands-on methods for doing so. The aim of this study was to identify possibilities and difficulties of using an ecosystem service approach when identifying and evaluating environmental impacts of a project. This was done by identifying and mapping ecosystem services connected to an apple orchard in southern Sweden. These were then integrated where possible when identifying, describing and evaluating the environmental impacts of the orchard. The results of this study showed that an ecosystem service approach was beneficial especially when identifying cumulative impacts, and that the variation of ecosystem services in time and space could be both a hindrance and a help when integrating them into the assessment. This study concludes that the biggest difficulty of an integration of ES into EIA is the lack of methods, both on how to map ecosystem services and how to integrate them into the EIA. It is therefore necessary to develop better methods on how to identify, measure and map different ecosystem services before developing methods on how to integrate them into assessment reports. With better methods an ecosystem service approach could have the ability to improve impact assessments by contributing with a more holistic view on several environmental aspects and to the identification of mitigation strategies of projects. I den här studien undersöks svårigheter och möjligheter med att praktiskt integrera ekosystemtjänster vid identifiering, beskrivning och bedömning av miljöeffekter enligt MKB-processen. Detta genom en fallstudie över en äppelodling utanför Lund där odlingens ekosystemtjänster har kartlagts innan de integrerades vid identifiering och bedömning av odlingens miljöpåverkan. Resultatet från studien visar att en integrering av ekosystemtjänster i många fall var relevant. Särskilt vid identifiering av odlingens kumulativa miljöpåverkan var ett ekosystemtjänstperspektiv behjälpligt eftersom ekosystemtjänster i många fall är beroende av större skalor både i tid och i rum. Ett ekosystemtjänstperspektiv bidrog också i det här fallet till att identifiera möjliga åtgärder för att minska odlingens miljöpåverkan. Det som genomsyrade hela studien och som också utgjorde den största svårigheten med att integrera ekosystemtjänster är bristen på tydliga metoder, dels metoder för att kartlägga ekosystemtjänster och dels metoder för hur en integrering bör genomföras. Att införa ekosystemtjänster som en obligatorisk del i miljökonsekvensbeskrivningar innebär ett extra resurskrävande steg i MKB-processen. För att ekosystemtjänster ska bli en nyttig och värdefull del av miljökonsekvensbeskrivningar behövs därför bättre metoder för hur de bör kartläggas och integreras. (Less)
