Abstract (Swedish)
This master thesis discusses the opinions of different people regarding new additions to present historic settings. The thesis´ starting-point is that additions and alterations have to be made; the question is how these additions can be made in a way that shows full respect of the old building and, at the same time, adds something new. Through interviews with four different groups of people, I wanted to find out which aspects that played the biggest role on how the interaction between the new addition and the historic building worked. Architects, architectural conservators, craftsmen specialized in building conservation and the general public all had the opportunity to express and argue their own specific standpoints in this matter. Using their own words, they were allowed to describe why they preferred one project before another, and also described their main reason why they ended up with that decision. The aim was to find out if certain aspects were more important than others when dealing with new additions in historic settings, something that in the end turned out hard to prove. However, some other interesting facts were appearing in the material. The four different groups did not always agree on how the new additions were to be made. In fact they did not even have the same premises whether the new addition were to fit in or to be in contrast with its surroundings. This thesis is a gathering of the participating persons’ opinions on how to make a new addition to an existing environment, together with my own reflections on this subject with the support of a Conservation Ethic developed by the architect Steven W. Semes. (Less)
