Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine adolescents in the age ranging between 20-25, with one or two foreign-born parents from the former Yugoslavia, experiencing their identity as this is a group considered to be established and well integrated in the Swedish society. As the study was based on a qualitative method using focus groups, the questions in the group sessions were initially more structured and then developed to more open-ended questions that opened up to further discussion. In three focus group interviews, a total of nine adolescents were asked to discuss their experiences, thoughts and opinions of identity and belonging. The analysis was based on a social constructive theory as well as a theory of the ”reversed refrigerator”,... (More)

The analysis was based on a social constructive theory as well as a theory of the ”reversed refrigerator”, developed by Thomas Hylland Eriksson, focusing on the identity created in the gray zone between being identified as both rather than either-or. As a conclusion, the adolescents can not identify themselves with the Swedish identity nor the origin identity as the gray zone identity is an identity in itself. Furthermore, another conclusion is that language skills, tradition and culture are crucial factors in being able to be identified as more or less Swedish as there are different dimensions of being Swedish according to the contributing respondents, which depend on behavior, language skills and integration in relation to Swedish culture.
