- Abstract
- Despite numerous reforms the gender inequalities associated with parental leave persists in Sweden. In 2005 the investigation of parental insurance recommended extending the quota for each parent. The government at the time however chose not to support the proposal, illuminating a potential tension between class and sex. The opponents within the government articulated affirmative action as competing with class interests. Former studies also prove that economic conditions affect the way parents divide the parental leave. The gender inequalities in the parental leave tend to be greater in families experiencing economic pressure. The opponents within the government articulated affirmative action as competing with class interests. Former studies also prove that economic conditions affect the way parents divide the parental leave. The gender inequalities in the parental leave tend to be greater in families experiencing economic pressure. However, the quota in the parental insurance has been extended since 2005 and affirmative action is mainly disputed today with reference to a potential tension between liberty and equality. This indicates that the way in which affirmative action is framed affect which reforms are supported. In this study I analyze how labor unions articulate affirmative action in the parental insurance. I use critical discourse analysis and the theory of intersectionality to investigate the relation between class and sex. The result establish that a tension between class and sex is not articulated in connection with affirmative action, thus neglecting the affect economic conditions have on parents use of parental leave.
