- Abstract
- This essay will illustrate the tensions in a city center containing large areas of cultural heritage environment and an ambition to exploit the land by reconstruction or densifying. This tension will be highlighted through a case study on the city of Lund. Lund city center contains large areas of cultural environment and the municipality of Lund wants to develop the city through densifying in areas in and close to the city center.
The main question for this essay is: How do large areas of culture
environments in the city center of Lund affect to the planning ambitions of
develop the city through densifying? With the subquestion: How would a reconstruction of the city center affect the character of Lund city?

(More) - This essay will illustrate the tensions in a city center containing large areas of cultural heritage environment and an ambition to exploit the land by reconstruction or densifying. This tension will be highlighted through a case study on the city of Lund. Lund city center contains large areas of cultural environment and the municipality of Lund wants to develop the city through densifying in areas in and close to the city center.
The main question for this essay is: How do large areas of culture
environments in the city center of Lund affect to the planning ambitions of
develop the city through densifying? With the subquestion: How would a reconstruction of the city center affect the character of Lund city?
The theoretical framework consists of an explanation of the cultural
environments importance to the inhabitant through a human geographic
perspective and potential explanation for this tension by the rent gap theory. The secondary data is based on literature study of academic books, documents from relevant municipalities and authorities and from other internet sources. The primary data have been collected through interviews and mail correspondence with the essays two key actors, Lund municipality and Länsstyrelsen Skåne. The result of the essay is that the cultural environment does not limit the municipality of Lund to plan the city through densifying. However can densifying lead to that valuable cultural environment can be affected of pressure of change that exists against the city center. (Less)
