(2018) PSPR14 20181Department of Psychology
- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- The aim of the study was to investigate the male experience of abortion and gain a deepened understanding for what feelings, thoughts and actions have occurred. Seven semistructured interviews were conducted and analyzed within an inductive thematic framework. Eight themes emerged: The woman’s decision, responsibility, feelings that arised, experiences of support, the communication with the partner, the effect on the relationship, hope and expectations and impact today. The results were in line with previous studies and indicated that the vast majority of men experienced mixed emotions and varied feelings of powerlessness. Some men found it traumatic. All men sup-ported the woman’s decision on abortion, regardless of their own opinion. The... (More)

All men sup-ported the woman’s decision on abortion, regardless of their own opinion. The main conclusions are that abortion can be a demanding experience and that men tend to take on a supporting role. The role is often perceived as unclear and some men handle their experiences and feelings in solitude. Lack of communication between the couple, and lack of information in what ways men can engage in the abortion, can enhance negative feelings. This study illustrated a need to acknowledge men’s participation in abortion and that it can be beneficial to support the men as well as the women. (Less)
