Abstract
This report addresses the traffic situation at Lilla Fiskaregatan in Lund, Sweden, where vulnerable road users move together in a space perceived as unsafe and which can make you feel insecure as a road user. In terms of traffic, the street is characterized by a lot of pedestrians and cyclist, having different intentions of walking on or travelling through the street. The street’s eventual problem with traffic safety for vulnerable road users is based on the messy traffic environment and difficult design of the street in general. The design gives rise to confusion for both pedestrians and cyclists due to the location of the bicycles path in the center of the street. Therefore, in practice, the street works as some kind of “shared space”,... (More)
This report addresses the traffic situation at Lilla Fiskaregatan in Lund, Sweden, where vulnerable road users move together in a space perceived as unsafe and which can make you feel insecure as a road user. Therefore, in practice, the street works as some kind of “shared space”, which means that the road users use the same space on the street. The purpose of this report is to, through analysis of recorded material of the traffic at Lilla Fiskaregatan, identify eventual problems in the street in terms of interactions and conflicts between vulnerable road users, and eventually possibly suggest improvements of the street when it comes to traffic environment and design of the street. The result in this report was produced by analyzing video recording of the street using the T-Analyst program. The result of the analysis of the video recordings showed that during the three days of filming the traffic on the street, there were 319 interactions between vulnerable road users in total, of which 7,2 % were conflicts. From the result, it was established that road users are often inattentive to their surroundings and to other road users around them, and cyclists often cycle through the street in a relatively high speed. These seem to be the main two contributing factors to interactions and conflicts between road users on the street, according the result of this study. The ambiguity of the design of the street causes pedestrians and cyclists to behave differently as road users on the street. Their different behaviors often contribute to a less good “teamwork” between them when it comes to sharing the space on the street properly and with respect for each other as different kinds of road users on the same street. Furthermore, a few concrete suggestions are given in this report about possible street improvements of the structure, design and traffic environment on the street. Examples of what can be done is to place flower boxes in the middle of the street to slow down cyclists, redirect some of the traffic on the street to relieve it or raise the sidewalks on the sides of the cyclist path to create some kind of clarity for the pedestrians.
