Research question: How are different barriers perceived in different forms of UIC, and how
do these barriers affect the expected outcome in each form of UIC?
Methodology: The analysis is based on three cases consisting of three corporate ventures
within science park Medicon Village, Lund, Sweden. The data was gathered through in-depth
qualitative interviews among three different roles within each venture.
Theoretical perspective: The theoretical perspectives used in this thesis mainly concern the
topics; (1) Forms of UIC (Schartinger, Schibany & Gassler 2001; Schartinger et al. 2002;
Austin, 2010 and Bruneel, D'Este & Salter, 2010) (2) Motivators and outcome for/of UIC (;
Lee, 2000; Boehm & Hogan, 2013; Ankrah & Al-Tabbaa, 2015 and Lai & Lu, 2016), and (3)
Barriers within UIC (Hall, Link & Scott, 2001; Siegel et al. 2003; Berman, 2008; Bruneel,
D'Este & Salter, 2010; Gilsing et al. 2011; Fiaz & Naiding, 2012 and van der Sijde, 2012).
Conclusion: The research indicates that each different form of University-Industry
Collaboration (UIC) is perceiving different barriers. The perceived barriers are significantly
influenced by factors such as experience with UIC and educational background. Also, a
relationship is identified between the transactional-related barriers and hard-outcome in the
formal form of UIC. (Less)
