- Abstract (Swedish)
- Abstract
- Storytelling is a common marketing practice, although there is still an absence within the field of research regarding how companies can use storytelling and what techniques they can draw use from. Therefore, this study aims to analyse how storytelling can be used in marketing by studying two prizewinning commercials. Accordingly, this study also aims to provide marketing practitioners with deeper knowledge regarding how to use storytelling in order to evoke emotions among potential consumers. To reach this aim we conducted a narrative analysis where we investigated what narrative features could be identified in the commercials. The results shows that narrative features like characters, conflict and theme can act as a driving technique in order to evoke emotions among the viewers. From this we drew conclusions that characters can act as a technique to evoke identification and empathy, while the conflict evokes emotions by drawing use from people’s disinclination toward imbalance in stories. Lastly, themes also act as a technique to communicate values and thereby generate a positive attitude towards the company behind the commercial. Hence, this study contributes a deeper knowledge on how companies can use storytelling in order to evoke emotions, thus enabling a possibility for future research to further investigate from the company’s point of view in order to achieve a more nuanced knowledge.
