Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the working conditions for the cabin crew, if they are subjected to power oppression, like harassment, and how gender-coded practitioners and gender conceptions are made as processes within the organization. We have created this study as a feminist contribution to the labor market studies, gender studies and law studies since harassment crosses all these disciplines.
We have chosen a qualitative research approach and as data collection method we chose semi-structured in-depth interviews which we conducted with eight informants - whom all works as cabin crew members for the same flight company. We have chosen a qualitative research approach and as data collection method we chose semi-structured in-depth interviews which we conducted with eight informants - whom all works as cabin crew members for the same flight company. Through the stories and experiences of the informants we could analyse their working conditions, reproduction of femininity, exposedness to oppression and how asymmetrical relations of power crossed each in a large and inequal network.
This study showed that the cabin crew were subjected to harassment and bad conditions at their workplace. This was something that had been normalized. The study also showed that the company cared deeply about the flight attendants image and used for instance handbooks to reproduce normative femininity. Therefore, the study argues that it seems like inequality regimes and gender conceptions operates within the profession that affects the work situation and vulnerability to misconduct. (Less)
