Abstract (Swedish)
Abstract (Swedish)
Today’s working life is becoming increasingly flexible, which is a consequence of and enabled by the technological development that is constantly affecting organizations around the world. According to a Swedish study from 2013 almost half (47 %) of the jobs on the Swedish labor market can be described as partly or even completely unregulated. But the question is whether this flexibility affects the health of employees and if there are characteristics of the individual that may be relevant to the outcome. A web-based survey including managers in the public sector was conducted to investigate whether there is a relationship between work outside regular office hours and psychological well-being. Furthermore, if the individual concepts conscientiousness, agreeableness, extroversion and cognitive defusion have a moderating effect on a possible relationship. The study resulted in a negative statistically significant relationship between psychological well-being and work-related phone calls in the weekend. However, the study found no support for neither conscientiousness, agreeableness, extroversion or cognitive defusion having a moderating effect on the above relationship. A notable result, which is not related to the study’s hypotheses, suggests that the privilege of working outside regular office hours is not used as an opportunity for flexitime but rather results in increased working hours. Furthermore, possible explanations of the outcome, strengths and limitations of the study, as well as suggestions for future research are discussed. Overall the study contributes to increased knowledge of individual aspects in relation to flexible work arrangements and psychological well-being, which increases the possibility of developing individualized strategies in pursuit of a sustainable working life.
