The power of co-creation: Exploring innovation at bottom of the pyramid arising from value co-creation

- Abstract
- Kenya is one of the world’s nations with the most severe problem of education inequality. Low-cost private schools (LCPS) have therefore become the main access to education for most families at the bottom of the pyramid (BOP), notably in remote and slum areas. In Homa Bay, one of the remote regions in Kenya, over 50 percent of its poor families’ children are attending these LCPS. However, due to schools’ lack of capacity for sustainability and innovation, most of them cannot survive in the long-term. Thus, a social venture named Changemaker in Slums launched the “Co- creating sustainable LCPS” project in 2016 to help improve the sustainable development of one of the LCPS in Homa Bay. Thus, a social venture named Changemaker in Slums launched the “Co- creating sustainable LCPS” project in 2016 to help improve the sustainable development of one of the LCPS in Homa Bay. By applying the co-creation approach, the core value for BOP innovation was identified as an attempt to build the school’s capacity for sustainability and innovation, so as to promote its sustainable development. Through an embedded in-depth case study, school-based activities of the project in Homa Bay were studied with qualitative action research carried out by three sub-groups in that school. The aim of this study is to explore participants’ perceptions of the applied co-creation approach in these activities, and implementers’ experiences of BOP innovation resulting from the implemented approach of value creation. The findings showed that participants perceived that value co-creation was implemented in two of the sub-groups, which had contributed to the school’s BOP innovation. The applied strategy of value creation in the third sub-group was not perceived to be in line with the value co-creation, and the implementers’ experience regarding BOP innovation was found to be constrained.
