Abstract
Historically, there has been a gap between business users and IT, and that gap is present in the BI context as well. As an attempt to bridge the gap, SSBI offers an environment which challenges the roles of business users and IT. Business users are empowered technically to create their own reports, while the role of IT shifts from being a roadblock to becoming a collaborator in meeting business needs. However, the influence of SSBI in the gap between business users and IT has not been mapped from previous studies. Therefore, this study focused on exploring how SSBI affects the gap between business users and IT. To achieve this aim, factors that influence the gap were generated from literature. Therefore, this study focused on exploring how SSBI affects the gap between business users and IT. To achieve this aim, factors that influence the gap were generated from literature. Then, based on these factors, empirical data was collected through interviews. Findings show that SSBI narrows the gap between business users and IT by enhancing the understanding and general technical knowledge of business users, while at the same time enabling IT to work closer with business users and better understand business needs. These findings can drive organizations to adopt SSBI environment and prepare for the changes that SSBI brings in the organization. Future studies can extend this study further by approaching business users and IT separately and conducting a cross analysis to bring in attention the different perspectives of both groups. (Less)
