Abstract
This report covers a task created by the company Tetra Pak in Lund on temperature control in plastic extrusion. The task of the assignment was about plastic extruder used in the Tetra Pak lamination process. In order for the polymer to have the correct viscosity prior to lamination, it must hold a certain temperature. The temperature of the plastic is affected by the friction of the screw which depends on the screw speed. The temperature is automatically controlled by heaters and coolers on the extruder, which work to maintain the specified temperature. High velocity changes of the screw causes heating control problems to maintain a constant temperature, which degrades the plastic quality. The task was undertaken to investigate the... (More)
This report covers a task created by the company Tetra Pak in Lund on temperature control in plastic extrusion. The task was undertaken to investigate the possibilities of improving automatic temperature control in order to reduce the amount of disposed plastic associated with speed changes in the extruder during operation. Due to time being limited by the slow reaction time of the test laminator it was concluded that a model should be made by the laminator based on the values that were acquired from the tests. A formula was needed to describe the relationship between temperature, screw speed and Power for the different stages of stable run periods. The formula which was implemented in the feedforward function was calculated. In the model it was shown that the feedforward function fitted very well and improvements were shown. (Less)
