Research question-/s: In the context of SMEs, how can organizational factors work as barriers during the assimilation of technology-led innovations?

Methodology: The study applies a single case study design on the examination of initiatives on technology-led innovation assimilation at a Swedish SME. It utilizes a mixed-strategy approach in answering the research question and entails primary data collected from semi-structured interviews as well as a questionnaire survey.

Theoretical perspectives: The study draws upon theoretical concepts from management and innovation literature to explain the importance of organizational factors affecting the assimilation process. Organizational variables are perceived as contextual precursors in the assimilation of technology-led innovations and can directly influence the process in facilitating or hindering manners depending on their extent and performance.

Conclusions: The aim of this study is to contribute to existing literature by identifying the challenges present among organizational factors in the small to medium-sized enterprise (SME) context. In addressing these factors, there are evident interdependencies between them in which when appropriately facilitated, can be prevented from functioning as barriers during the course of assimilation initiatives. Findings show this can be achieved only when the identified factors are approached in manners suited to the smaller firm context of SMEs and the unique dynamism of closer relationships between top management (as implementer of new technologies) and staff (as users) are considered.
