The purpose of this essay is to investigate the ethics of the Union of Socialists-Revolutionaries Maximalists. The SR Maximalist, a political organization which belongs to the Narodniks’ ideological tradition, became widely known because of their terrorist activities and robberies, the so-called expropriations. Maximalists’ declared to go “directly to the goal”– to realize political and economic upheaval immediately. The basis of the SR Maximalists ethics was the idea about “the obligatory”. Understanding “the obligatory” shaped reality itself, according to the Maximalists’ accounts. This idea was applied for both their views on both the individual and the society; according to Maximalists' accounts the ethical idea about “the obligatory” formed the theoretical foundation for the terror and the definition of the Socialist goals of the Revolution. ”The obligatory” formed also the idea of duty for the individual and the ethical group’s rules. The meaning of the essay is to research the Maximalists’ ethical principle implementation in theoretical approach to terror and in their practical militant activity. The method in the essay is hermeneutic; the purpose with this is to consider Maximalists ethic as they themselves imagined and described it. The Maximalists' own sources produced between 1906 and 1910 are used in the research. The result is discussed in a more extensive historiographical context. (Less)
