Kring Stenarna - En lägerskola i tegel

- Abstract
- When you first step ashore the island of Ven, in Öresund right between Sweden and Denmark, you have two options. Either you go straight ahead, towards the bike rental, or you turn to your right and start walking along the shore. If you do so, you will soon start to find colourful pebbles on the ground along the waterline. Some are round and soft to the touch, others are rough and edgy, and they are red, yellow, brown, grey and everything in between. Ven used to be one of the main brick making sites in the region, exporting the product to the growing cities of the Öresund region via the waterways. Today no bricks are made here anymore, but in this thesis, I’ve tried to revive the memories by delving in to the world of bricks. I’ve designed a space for education on Ven, a building that pupils and teachers on the main land can visit for a few days to learn about the local history and biology, what is in Swedish called a Lägerskola. The project is about education in a personal basis as well. My ambition has been to learn as much about bricks and brick architecture as possible, doing so by drawing and designing into the smallest detail. The result is a building with walls and roofs, but it is also a collection of details, building parts and furniture that could stand together or by themselves. In the same way as I hope the users of the building would be inspired to learn more about bricks and architecture, it is my hope that this thesis will inspire any readers to do the same. (Less)
