- Abstract
- Transport planning has, during the last century, been focused on the car and its accessibility. This has led to low-density urban areas, also known as urban sprawl. Densification is a planning strategy which counteract this by developing and building within the city limits. In combination with conscious transport planning, densification leads to shorter travel distances, good public transport and a less car dependent society as a whole, which all contribute to a sustainable society. The purpose of this thesis is twofold. Firstly, the study aims to create an overview of research and practice regarding sustainable transport planning in densification areas. The purpose of this thesis is twofold. Firstly, the study aims to create an overview of research and practice regarding sustainable transport planning in densification areas. Secondly, the study aims to investigate whether or not transport planning in practice is done with sustainability in mind and to identify any difficulties with this type of planning. This is done by a literature study which ends by creating a toolbox with important principles regarding sustainable transport planning in the city. The literature study and the toolbox lays the foundation for a traffic study, containing a traffic proposition based on an area in Malmö, which is discussed during a workshop with individuals active in this line of business. The result shows that it is a combination of restrictive planning for the car whilst facilitating the sustainable modes of transportation. The workshop indicated that this can be challenging to implement in practice as transport planners face several difficulties; compromise between different municipal administrations, technical fields and interests; conflicts between and within the different aspects of sustainability; economical aspects.
