A Textile Exploration

Abstract
The purpose of this project was at first to explore textiles. It started off by a visit to The Swedish School of Textiles in Borås. I was introduced to the basics of textiles and was shown new textile materials at Smart Textiles. Coming home, I came to the conclusion of doing it my way, with the view of an Industrial Designer.

Having prior experience with a similar project I knew that it was important to let the process have its way and not put too much effort into steering it in a certain direction. There- fore I began playing around with different kinds of fabrics to hopefully make some discoveries. As a designer it is im- portant to know that the outcome of a project quite often doesn’t turn out as expected.

With the help of a flashlight and a magnifying glass pat- terns were discovered created by the threads in the fabric. Depending on the fabric, the patterns were different. By extracting the negative patterns of the threads patterns were created. At this point it was hard knowing how the project would turn out, and it went down a road not ex- pected in the beginning. The decision of staying on the road was made, even though it was quite an abstract way of continuing. The patterns were testet further with the help of light and the discovery that they were the most impres- sive in a bigger scale was made. By altering and repeating the patterns and doing further light testing the “effect” of the patterns became the main focus point.

The result is a light and shadow play reflected on the walls, ceiling and floor of a room. By doing of the lights and pat- terns they were applied in different situations. (Less)
