- Abstract (Swedish)
- Ditching forests in favor of for example better tree growth can affect and change factors such as soil temperature and soil moisture. Those are the most important factors for soil respiration and the flow of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. The soil respiration accounts for the major flux of CO2
to the atmosphere from the terrestrial ecosystem. CO2 is an important
greenhouse gas and small changes in this flux can create changes in carbon cycles as well as an increase in the concentration of CO2 into the atmosphere, which may affect the future climate. Therefore, it is important to investigate which factors and how much they affect the flux of this important greenhouse gas to the atmosphere.

Therefore, it is important to investigate which factors and how much they affect the flux of this important greenhouse gas to the atmosphere.
In this study, the difference in soil CO2-efflux was investigated in early spring (March-May) from the soil between two deciduous forest sites in Scania, southern Sweden with respect to the drainage quality, Baldringe ängar (poor drainage quality) and Nyvångsskogen (good drainage quality). The purpose of this study was to answer the question: Is there a difference in soil CO2-efflux from soil nearby ditches of poor and good quality respectively. The highest average soil CO2-efflux was found on Baldringe ängar (2.01 μmol m-2 s -1) where
the average soil temperature also was highest (8.19 ˚C) along with the soil moisture (56.77%).
The water table was the lowest in the Nyvångsskogen area (13.15 cm). The unexpected higher soil CO2-efflux in Baldringe ängar can be partly explained by higher ground temperatures due to sparse canopy cover. Soil temperature is an important factor for soil respiration and soil CO2-efflux. However, the soil temperature does not explain everything. The fact that the soil vegetation was more established in Baldrigne ängar affects both the activity of decomposers,
the soil roots and the amount of organic matter in the soil. Future studies on this subject should investigate more underlying factors such as soil composition, the thickness of the humus layer, ground vegetation and shallow soil roots. (Less)
