- Abstract
- Young children have been identified as particularly exposed to fires. This study aims at investigating pre-school children's level of knowledge about fire and evacuation and if the level of knowledge increases after an education. The aim has also been to present guidelines of how educational materials for children of that age should be designed. The work has been conducted by interviews with preschool children who have listened to evacuation alarms and answered questions and by questionnaires to pre-school teachers and rescue services. Literature studies have also been an important part of the work together with a review of different types of educational materials, both Swedish and international.

Literature studies have also been an important part of the work together with a review of different types of educational materials, both Swedish and international.
The conclusions from the study are that the children's level of knowledge today is lower than desired, but that education improves the level if it is repeated. The study suggests that the rescue services should educate pre-school children and that the teachers then repeats the education every six months. The study also showed that spoken evacuation alarms are inappropriate in buildings primarily used by young children, as they find it difficult to perceive the message. Finally, the study also presents what educational materials should contain and how they should be designed pedagogically. (Less)
