The purpose of this essay is to show how the Vinnova financed pilot project Internet of Things (IoT) can be regarded as an expression of the marketing of places as a management of control measure. The so-called Place marketing is a theory referring to the development of brands and identities in geographic regions as an instrument for political orientation as well as a transitional process. The study used a methodological structure of a qualitative idea analysis with the purpose of studying the underlying concept of orientation as either goal oriented or vision oriented. The ideas are analyzed comparing/using three ideal types, all constructed from the theoretical framework. These ideal types analyzed are competition, change and benefit. The primary material, to which the three ideal types are applied, is represented from the National Agenda; the strategy program for IoT Sweden. The analysis problematizes and discusses the ideal types and their operationalized indicators in the context of their origin in either goal-oriented or visionary instruments. The result of the study shows how all three ideal types occur and is expressed in the National Agenda. Additionally, the result shows how IoT Sweden is operating under both visionary and goal-oriented ideas and instruments as a foundation for their objectives and ambitions. (Less)
