Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine ex-offender’s reintegration in the Swedish society after being released from prison through the experiences of probation inspectors (frivårdsinspektörer). The results have been analysed through the theory and concepts: motivation, normalization and collaboration, but also through previous research. The results of the study showed that reintegration in society after serving in prison is important, and according to the respondents the ex-offenders need help and support for a successful reintegration. An unsuccessful reintegration leads to a higher level of recidivism. The results clarified that the key to normalizing a destructive lifestyle is not through longer prison terms, instead it showed that the best results regarding recidivism in crime is through reintegration instead of instant release. Furthermore, it appeared that the most significant conditions for a successful reintegration to society after serving in prison is collaboration between different authorities, but the key to change did mainly depend on the mindset of the individual. The risk of recidivism was high in those situations when the lack of motivation and collaboration was the case. Other different important conditions for reintegration was employment, housing, treatment and the help of lay probation officers. In some cases, change could also be made by religion and stable relationships. (Less)
