The aim of this study was, from a discourse analytical approach, to investigate similarities and differences in how it was talked about mental illness in the past and how it¬ is talked about mental illness today, in order to identify and analyze the significance of different discourses. The study describes a qualitative text analysis of newspaper articles from the Swedish daily newspaper Svenska Dagbladet. The articles selected as the empirical material consisted of 12 articles from the 1970’s and 2010’s and were analyzed using Fairclough's critical discourse analytic concepts. In the study, two distinct discourses, which characterized a way to talk about mental illness during the two decades, mainly appeared: a biological discourse and a social discourse. The main similarities in the material between the two decades was in the bio-logical discourse where the discussion about the best solution to mental illness is psychological help, although medical help was the most widely used. The discussion on the social discourse demon¬strated that Swedish society changed from the 1970’s to the 2010’s and that this af-fected the discourse around mental illness. The material from both decades clearly showed that society and external circumstances were considered the cause of people's mental illness, with only a bit more focus on the individual during the 2010’s.
