- Beowulfkvädet skrevs antagligen ned någon gång på 1000-talet och eftersom att vi bara har en kopia av manuskriptet kvar kan vi med säkerhet säga att historien om Beowulf inte ändrats de senaste 1000 åren. Trots detta har våra tolkningar av Beowulfkvädet varierat kraftigt de senaste 100 åren. Jag har med hjälp av ett 40-tal översättningar och analyser av Beowulfkvädet skrivna mellan åren 1901-2018 i Sverige, Storbritannien och USA försökt hitta dessa skillnader och koppla dem till utvecklingen inom historie- och litteraturvetenskapen i de berörda länderna. Det jag fann var att förändringarna i hur Beowulfkvädet tolkats mycket riktigt följt de förändringar som skett både inom historie- och litteraturvetenskapen, men också i de berörda ländernas historia i stort då till exempel de båda världskrigen varit klara brytpunkter i hur texten analyserats. Med hjälp av dessa resultat kunde jag också måla upp en bild av ländernas historiekulturer och visa på hur mycket dessa förändrats de senaste 100 åren. (Less)

- The Beowulf manuscript was probably written sometime during the eleventh century and since we only have one copy of the manuscript we can say for sure that the story of Beowulf has not changed during the last 1000 years. I have with the help of over 40 different translations and analyses of the Beowulf manuscript written between the years 1901-2018 in Sweden, Great Britain and the USA tried to find these differences and to connect them to the developments in the academic studies of history and literature in the mentioned countries. I have also used the differences in the source material to show how the historic culture in the countries has changed during the examined time. What I found was that the changes in how the Beowulf manuscript has been interpreted indeed follows the changes within both the academic studies of history and literature but also the examined countries history at large since for example the two world wars has been clear inflection points in how the text has been analysed. With the help of these results I could paint a picture of the historic culture of the countries and show how this had changed during de last 100 years. (Less)
