Although how the staff of nursing home for elderly care looks about alcohol or how consumption is today is relatively unexplored. Totally five semi-structured interviews at four different housing for elderly in three municipalities were gathered. The interview questions focused on the nursing staff’s experience of working with the elderly with assessed alcohol problems and how they could solve these situations. The interviews were analyzed using Scott and Lyman’s theory of account. The main findings in this study were, like previous research, that there was a lack of knowledge regarding the influence between alcohol consumption and medication, and in what way elderly people were affected by heavy drinking. It was also proved to be a difficult-balanced task for the nursing staff between on the hand of responsibility for the elderly's health and on the other hand elderly’s self-determination. This dilemma was seen as an excuse (accounts) for actions by the staff to make interventions to influence the elderly with alcohol problems, for example, by hiding the bottles in the elder’s own flat.
