The consequences during the cold War for small democracy like Sweden was to either be a part of the western bloc equated with NATO, or participate on the international arena in the UN cooperation or try to unite the Scandinavian countries in a Nordic military defence cooperation. During this era Sweden had to walk on a thin line in order to convince at least the Soviet union that we meant what we were saying in the foreign declaration.
The essay uses Graham Allison’s theoretical model to find similarities of how Sweden acted during the Cold war until today regarding national defence cooperation. The analysis shows that use of Allison’s models explains why Sweden acted as they did. Sweden has developed with and adopt to factual circumstances. Sometime even in a hidden way, if needed. (Less)
