- Abstract
- France has for a long time been affected by social movements which have now become commonplace in the society. Research interested in the specificities of this country has especially shown the importance of trade unions in the organization of the actions. However, unlike its French predecessors, the Yellow Vests movement developed and organized itself with the exclusive use of digital media, just like the Arab Spring or #MeToo. The movement spread all over the country, gathering thousands of individuals demanding the resignation of the President.

(More) - France has for a long time been affected by social movements which have now become commonplace in the society. The movement spread all over the country, gathering thousands of individuals demanding the resignation of the President.
This thesis aims at complementing social movement research by showing how the Yellow Vests came within the scope of twenty-first century protests. In the purpose of understanding how social media became the tools for actors to develop their cause, recruit and win the loyalty of new members, the present thesis especially looks at online discussions on Facebook.
This is done by using a qualitative textual analysis of comments and posts published on the group called “la france en colère!!!” (“the angry France” in English) between October and December 2018, which covers the beginning and the peak of the movement. The method is mainly based on tools developed by Fairclough in his critical discourse analysis, and completed by other notions. The aim is to shed light on the crucial role of emotions in transforming an unorganized gathering of indignations to a strong family-like community who turns their actions into events.
The role of emotions in the engagement of actors is still quite overlooked by researchers, and a deep qualitative textual analysis of specific wording and grammar unveils their significance in the twenty-first century movements, while giving a better understanding of this contemporary
phenomenon. (Less)
