Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate how experienced psychodynamic psychotherapists experience close encounters with their clients and how they can change as a result of it. Since negative aspects of the psychotherapeutic work are more highlighted in psychotherapy research, this study focused on how psychotherapists experience positive and meaningful changes. Three experienced psychodynamic therapists took part in semi-structured interviews that were analysed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Two main themes were identified in the analysis, meetings at deeper levels and a deepening of one’s presence. The psychotherapists described their close encounters with their clients as a transformative, boundless and embodied... (More)

Three experienced psychodynamic therapists took part in semi-structured interviews that were analysed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Two main themes were identified in the analysis, meetings at deeper levels and a deepening of one’s presence. The psychotherapists described their close encounters with their clients as a transformative, boundless and embodied experience that involved a deep presence in their own inner life as well as in the client's inner life. Their encounters with clients resulted in changes such as a feeling of being more present in themselves and together with others as well as in the existential dimensions of life. The close meetings in the therapeutic relationship intensified the psychotherapists' contact with their own feelings, which were understood to be substantial for the perceived changes. These experiences were described as a freedom of becoming one’s true self. (Less)
