Abstract
Social sustainability is an increasingly addressed aspect of urban planning projects. The concept of social sustainability is by many perceived as vague and broad, which mainly derives from its complex constitution. The meaning and constitution of social sustainability is hard to define, and large amounts of research aim to clarify its definition. As the theoretical knowledge regarding social sustainability evolves, it is imperative to examine how the concept is applied in the actual planning practice. This thesis aims to do so, by examining the case of Sege Park in Malmö, which is a prioritized planning project aiming to be the new forerunner of sustainable urban planning projects by the city of Malmö. The study is based on a theoretical framework mainly consisting of social sustainability. Safety and accessibility is used as indicators of social sustainability regarding urban physical design. By analyzing planning documents and interviews with city officials involved in the planning project the study shows that access to public space is of great importance to social sustainability. Furthermore, many of the measures and strategies aiming to enable social sustainability in Sege Park cannot be regulated in the planning process itself, and is to a significant extent dependent on land owners and contractors to be realized.
