Taking a starting point in museum activism this thesis explores what it means for museums to take a political stand, which aims to work for a democratic and humanitarian development of society. The research has been done, by interviewing individuals in decision-making positions within the Swedish museum sector. The second question explores what it means for museums to be a voice in the social debate?... (More)

The first question is in what way museums can be a voice in the social debate? Under this question it is looked upon what expressions it might take. The second question explores what it means for museums to be a voice in the social debate? This often means that museums take a stand in a more or less obvious way. By using Institutional theory three roles has been identified: The museum as the responsible institution, the museum as an institution that creates values and the museum as an institution that educate. One of the conclusions are that a work practice that earlier has been relevant to fulfill the aim of the museum according to its values might in our time need a new approach. The result shows that it is of importance that if the museum takes a stand it needs to be based upon the museums field of work. It also reveals that even though museums do not look upon themselves as activists they are active actors in the society. One of the conclusions that has been made is that our present time might demand another approach then before to fulfill their commitment. (Less)
