Abstract
The main purpose of this master's thesis is to explore how public libraries in Sweden work to increase digital skills among older people. This is done by studying social practices in digital technology workshops at local meeting places for older people. Public librarians participated as instructors and the purpose of these workshops was to enhance the digital skills of older people.

This study is placed in the context of the ongoing digitalization of society, where the technological developments put individuals and groups at risk of being digitally and socially excluded. The study also discusses the role of the public library in supporting the digitally excluded.

The theoretical approach is based on practice theory as put forward by Andreas Reckwitz. The thesis also employs a conceptual framework based on the concepts of information literacy, digital skills and digital competence, and it contributes to such a framework by proposing the use of “digital related practices” as a concept intended to better grasp the meaning of the practices observed in the workshops.

The study was performed using an ethnographic method called “work-along”, where the ethnographer participates in the work-activities of the setting.

The analysis reveals that the sociomateriality of the meeting places influences the digital related practices in the workshops by facilitating or impeding social interaction. The analysis also suggests that there are three main types of digital related practices present in workshops: learning practices, support practices and interest practices.

The thesis’s main contribution to previous research is the suggestion that activities aimed at enhancing the digital skills of older people not only should be understood as learning practices but also as support practices for those that find it difficult to learn digital skills and appropriate digital technology.
