(2019) ENTN39 20191Department of Business Administration
- Abstract
- Title: The mediating role of Organizational Capabilities between Environmental Regulations and Environmental Innovation.
Keywords: Environmental Innovation, Organizational Capabilities, Environmental Regulations.
Research question: How do environmental regulations impact environmental innovation through organizational capabilities?
Methodology: This research has been conducted through a single case study following a qualitative research design to describe how organizational capabilities are affected by regulations, and their further relation to the development of environmental innovation. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed according to Gioia, Corley and Hamilton (2012).

Theoretical perspective: Literature regarding environmental regulations, organizational capabilities and environmental innovation constitute the basis of the theoretical review. Moreover, additional research was conducted in order to determine the drivers and the specific interactions between the concepts.
Conclusions: This study focused on examining how the organization reacts to the impact of environmental regulations, and further, fosters the development of environmental innovation. It was found that that these dynamics take place through the development of Organizational Capabilities, which play a positive mediating role between Environmental Regulations and Environmental Innovation. The mediating role of Organizational Capabilities is explained by three interactions. The first one is the positive impact that Environmental Regulations have on Environmental Innovation. This is described by Manufacturing Regulations fostering Eco Process Innovation, and Composite Materials Regulations promoting the development of Eco Product Innovation. The second one is positive influence that Organizational Capabilities have on Environmental Innovation. Four capabilities were found to be enablers for Eco Process and Eco Product Innovation: Collaboration Capabilities, Green Managerial Capabilities, Knowledge Diffusion Capabilities and Environmental Agility. The third interaction relates to the effects of Environmental Regulations on each of the four Organizational Capabilities identified as relevant for Environmental Innovation. These effects are presented in the form of responses that are implemented as a consequence of the regulations. (Less) - Popular Abstract
