Exploring the Circular Economy: The Case of the Food Industry in Sweden
(2019) EKHS34 20191Department of Economic History
- Abstract
- The food system today is faced with enormous challenges, leading to negative externalities which influence all the layers of sustainable development. In this scenario, the transition from a linear to a Circular Economy for the global food system, but also for the entire economy, has been proposed as a solution towards reducing environmental pressure from economic growth. The aim of this thesis is to explore the concept of Circular Economy applied in the Swedish Food Industry and this way to contribute to a better understanding of the term, its implementations and its implications in leading to more sustainable food systems. The research focuses on the Swedish landscape, having as scope to identify the most recurrent circular economy... (More)
- The food system today is faced with enormous challenges, leading to negative externalities which influence all the layers of sustainable development. The research focuses on the Swedish landscape, having as scope to identify the most recurrent circular economy strategies used by companies in the food industry, through a qualitative research design, and furthermore, to inquire the technological prerequisites and economic opportunities generated by a Circular Economy implementation. The research approach consists in the use of both a qualitative codebook and an open, semi-structured interview protocol. In order to facilitate the organization and further analysis of data the qualitative research software NVivo12 is used. The thesis aims to benefit future academic research, as the Circular Economy field is rapidly expanding; therefore, there is a need for more experimentation and specific industry case-studies. (Less)
