Abstract
Given the increased number of people on sick-leave as a result of mental illness, we were interested in the practical implementation of Work-life balance at a company. The purpose of the study was to gain more knowledge about what meaning and importance Work-life balance has for them in both working life and private life through the employees' own descriptions. An inductive thematic analysis based on 9 interviews resulted in 3 main themes: The view on balance between private life and working life, Working conditions and Factors of the working environment. Given the increased number of people on sick-leave as a result of mental illness, we were interested in the practical implementation of Work-life balance at a company. The purpose of the study was to gain more knowledge about what meaning and importance Work-life balance has for them in both working life and private life through the employees' own descriptions. An inductive thematic analysis based on 9 interviews resulted in 3 main themes: The view on balance between private life and working life, Working conditions and Factors of the working environment. Work-life balance was described as a clear boundary between private and working life, but also as a state of well-being where factors, such as a pleasant workplace or a good salary, affected the experience of this. The result was similar to the definition of both Guest (2002) and Sonnentag, Kuttler och Fritz (2009) and showed a positive effect of the possibility of a clear boundary between private- and working life, and, by the managers, to work in a way that was self-chosen and gave a sense of wellbeing. Both staff and the company we are investigating demonstrate positive effects of the company's Work-life balance strategies. No evidence of stress or mental illness among the staff emerged from our survey, which indicates that the company's strategies around WLB work. (Less)
