The study shows that being an ideal construction worker is not enough to be included in the homosocial companionship. Instead, processes of inclusion work through cooptation, where the initial group members decide who gets to join. Consequently, construction workers are forced to subject themselves to the homosocial companionship, which maintains hegemonic masculinity and men's position of power through verbal and physical expressions of dominance. Construction workers are thereby placed in a compromised position as they are in need of companionship in order to fulfil their tasks at work. (Less)
