- Abstract
- In Sweden women with an immigrant background are through different policies frequently secluded to care labour. Consequently, a big part of women migrating to Sweden work as an assisting nurse in eldercare. The aim of this study is therefore to further develop an understanding of these women’s agency in Sweden, by discovering how agency exists in relation to work, family and spare time. Therefore, this study consists of seven semi-structured interviews conducted with women working as assisting nurses. Furthermore, a constitutive part of this paper is to identify factors that increase and decrease agency. However, this approach highlights an ambivalence, since restrictions and enactment of agency are found within the same context.... (More)

Furthermore, a constitutive part of this paper is to identify factors that increase and decrease agency. However, this approach highlights an ambivalence, since restrictions and enactment of agency are found within the same context. Therefore, this ambivalence is studied throughout to emphasise the varying ways agency is present in their lives. The result of the study accentuates that women’s agency decreases due to structures related to gender, ethnicity and class. Simultaneously, it is also within these limiting contexts that their agency becomes visible. Furthermore, the study displays that women’s agency and the ambivalence is complex and individual, where no overarching conclusions can be found. Thus, it highlights the complex and varying contexts women’s agency is executed - both inside and outside the workplace. (Less)
