- Abstract
- This thesis project investigates how gaze, power and architecture are entwined. The starting point for the project is a book from 1903, written by German writer and playwright Frank Wedekind. The novella, called "Mine-haha or On the bodily education of young girls" is a strange allegorical story about a group of girls going to a border school. At this school they learn to control their bodies and bodily desires, to perform on a theater stage that is located in the park area of the school. The theater is where the outside audience and the inside world of the girls meet. The outside gaze of patriarchy meet the young girls, performing on stage.

The starting point for the project is a book from 1903, written by German writer and playwright Frank Wedekind. The novella, called "Mine-haha or On the bodily education of young girls" is a strange allegorical story about a group of girls going to a border school. At this school they learn to control their bodies and bodily desires, to perform on a theater stage that is located in the park area of the school. The theater is where the outside audience and the inside world of the girls meet. The outside gaze of patriarchy meet the young girls, performing on stage.
My work has partly been theoretical, partly design oriented. In the theoretical part, I researched how gaze is used in architecture through existing theories. By analyzing who is watching and who is being watched, I understood the lack of human authority. This led me to the conclusion that the architecture is key in maintaining the power structure of the school. And in realizing the power of gaze, I realized the power of architecture as a silent director of gaze.
In the design-oriented part of my work I worked with Peep shows. The peep shows allowed me to work with gaze in a very direct way. I chose three important buildings described in the book and interpreted them into models. The models can be viewed from two viewpoints. The primary viewpoint shows a scenario from the girls´ perspective. The secondary view shows the more obscured perspective of the beholder. Along the way, I realized that gaze can be a very powerful tool of control, especially when taking the permanent shape of architecture. (Less) - Abstract (Swedish)

Jag analyserade vem som tittar och vem som blir betraktad. Genom att inse frånvaron av någon mänsklig övervakande instans, insåg jag arkitekturens roll i upprätthållandet av maktstrukturen på skolan. Genom att förstå den makt som potentiellt finns i en blick, förstod jag också makten i arkitekturen som ett tyst ramverk för blick.
I design-delen arbetade jag med Tittskåp. Tittskåpen gav mig ett konkret sätt att arbeta med bokens rum. Jag valde att gestalta tre viktiga byggnader i boken och tolkade dem i modeller. Modellerna kan ses i varsitt skåp och varje skåp har två två titthål. Det primära titthålet är från flickornas perspektiv. Det sekundära titthålet ger ett mer obskyrt betraktar perspektiv av samma scen. Under arbetets gång förstod jag hur blick kan vara ett kraftfullt maktredskap, speciellt när det tar sig uttryck i form av arkitektur. (Less) - Popular Abstract (Swedish)
- Hur påverkas en individ av att vara exponerad för en yttre, okänd blick i ett rum? Vilken roll spelar arkitekturen som ramverk för denna blick? Hur kan arkitektur genom detta vara bärare av en maktstruktur?
Det här var frågor som dök upp när jag läste den tyske författaren och dramatikern, Frank Wedekinds kortroman, Mine-haha eller Om unga flickors kroppsliga uppfostran, från 1903.
I det här examensarbetet undersöker jag relationen mellan arkitektur, makt och blick genom Wedekinds roman. Jag ser på hur arkitektur kan spela en performativ roll i upprätthållandet av en given maktstruktur, och jag undersöker hur maktutövande kan gestaltas rumsligt.
