- Abstract
- Resource Based View (RBV) describes processes where companies develop competitive advantages that are sustainable over time. Arguments within RBV links company’s growth and increased market shares to sustained competitive advantages. In order to prove sustained competitive advantages, it is necessary to take the time factor into consideration.
Companies innovate to improve their offer. The expectations are higher revenues and increased marketposition. Information technology was chosen since the industry is characterized to be driven by innovation and technical development. The study seeks to analyze the correlation between R&D-cost, R&D intensity to revenue and market share five years in the future.

The study shows companies that continually invests in R&D can expect to see an increase in market share and revenues after five years. The R&D intensity had shown a negative correlation to market shares. Form the result it can be stated that R&D-costs contribute to preserve market shares over time and that it can be seen as an important contributor to long term success. Finally, the study concludes that the effect of R&D on sustainable competitive advantages cannot be guaranteed, however it might affect the creation of organizational capabilities. Utifrån resultatet konstateras att FoU-kostnaderna bidrar till att bibehålla marknadsandelar över tid och att de ses som en viktig faktor för långsiktig framgång. Avslutningsvis visar studien att det inte garanteras att FoU-investeringar leder till hållbara konkurrensfördelar, men att FoU mycket väl kan påverka uppkomsten av organisatoriska förmågor. (Less)
