Today, the reproduction of the spaces is mostly realized through urban transformation processes. These processes are in evidence around all over the world. Urban transformation is an ambiguous umbrella definition that includes different actors, different processes and different fields.
Beyond spatial changes, these transformations also affect social relationships and networks, which are vital for socioeconomically vulnerable groups in Istanbul, which is the most densely populated city in Turkey.
In the Turkish case, which is referred to state-led urban transformation, displacement and dispossession processes led public opposition. During this process, public opposition started to institutionalize in reply to urban policies and the intensity of urban transformation. Neighborhood associations, which are the subject of the study, were also established in this context. Currently, they are organized at the national level under the name of the Union of Neighborhoods in Turkey.
Understanding the engagement and experiences of residents to these neighborhood associations will be the aim of the research. The concept of social capital, which provides a broad understanding of social interactions and social networks, will form the theoretical framework. In accordance with the study, the concept of social capital has been examined under three dimensions: social network, trust and reciprocity, civil skills.
According to the findings of the research, social capital, which includes three interdependent dimensions, has transformed and has been instrumentalized according to the transformations in the city. (Less)
