- Digital platforms is an innovation made possible by the adoption of computers and internet. Companies like Google and Facebook grew in relatively short time to the most valuable or-ganisations on the stock market. The success of these companies is partially possible by their characteristics of being a digital platforms. One of the success factors is the use open APIs, which makes that other parties are attracted to the digital platform. In the last decade it shows that traditional industries get disrupted by adopting digital platforms. Uber is an example that changed the taxi and transportation industry. Euro-pean banks are forced by the PSD2 legislation to start opening APIs to third parties. This can be seen as the first step towards digital platforms in the banking sector. Banks can chose for different strategies to react to these disruptive developments. This thesis is about how banks can adapt to and profit from the phenomenon of open APIs and digital platforms in the bank-ing sector. (Less)
