The practises of public transport in urban planning - a gentrification process in disguise?

- Abstract
- The aim of this thesis is to further explore the relationship between the establishment of public transport and gentrification processes. There have been various studies showing the importance of public transport as a contributing factor in providing access to work and other important institutions in urban areas. However, recent studies have also shown that the establishment of public transport in certain areas or situations might also contribute to gentrification processes and the displacement of people, rendering these establishments fruitless or even contradictory to their alleged purpose to serve those who need it the most. With this in mind, the Swedish city of Malmö has been used as a case to study this relationship further. More... (More)

With this in mind, the Swedish city of Malmö has been used as a case to study this relationship further. More specifically, the establishment of a new train station in the neighbourhood of Rosengård has been studied. Using statistics through GIS and analysing both policy and planning documents, results point toward both an increased displacement of people after the establishment of the train station and the failure of planners and policy makers to recognize the in part problematic relationship between public transport and gentrification. I will argue that this is due to the increasingly neoliberal planning in Malmö and a result of the city’s attempts of moving away from its past. (Less)
