- Abstract
- This paper is based upon the theory of russian foreign policy strategies, formulated by professor Thomas Ambrosio in 2008. The theory categorizes the different strategies in which Russia acts depending on country and region in order to consolidate authoritarian power. This study acts as an update after an eventful decade, and aims to further clarify if the theory and its categories are still relevant or require additions. In order to test the theory on the past decade, the study is concentrated on the “bolster”-strategy, which the theory gives examples of in Belarus, and the “subvert”-strategy, which would be the case in Ukraine. After going through the theory as a whole, we give a detailed description of relevant domestic events in both... (More)

In order to test the theory on the past decade, the study is concentrated on the “bolster”-strategy, which the theory gives examples of in Belarus, and the “subvert”-strategy, which would be the case in Ukraine. After going through the theory as a whole, we give a detailed description of relevant domestic events in both countries that has occured since the theory was written. The events and happenings are thereafter further analyzed and put into context and perspective in order to confirm the relevance of Ambrosios theory. The results are mixed but fairly positive; after a decade marked by the Ukrainian revolution, the Crimean crisis and the following economic backwash, both countries has gone through a shift in the relations with their eastern neighbour. However, the study concludes named strategies are still visible underneath. (Less)
