- There is no given answer to the question how participatory democracy activities affects the representative democracy. However, in an attempt to answer the question, this thesis use theories about democracy, influence of participatory activities and the roles of politicians in order to examine how citizen dialogues affects the decision making of politicians in Region Skåne (Sweden).
The theoretical analysis done on the empirical material gathered from surveys, documents and interviews, indicates that the citizen dialogues in Region Skåne can influence the decision making of the politicians in an indirect way. However, the indirect influence is limited, and the thesis indicates that the influence highly depends on individual politicians... However, the indirect influence is limited, and the thesis indicates that the influence highly depends on individual politicians or parties pursuing an idea or question. The consequences of the way in which citizen dialogue affects the decision making of the politicians are understood very differently depending on which theoretical perspective is applied.
Based on the theoretical framework used, the thesis concludes that the citizen dialogues in Region Skåne are not a threat towards the representative democracy. Further research is needed to examine other factors that could answer the question, as well as to study other effects the non-party related political dialogue has on democracy. (Less)
